Marifah Middle School Program encompasses 6th through 8th grade. At this level our students are exposed to both a strong curriculum and after school activities that push their development steadily forward. Future leaders are given an early opportunity to present their talents both academically and through competitions. Subjects are taught using a departmentalized system.
Instruction includes grammar, spelling, and writing techniques which enable students to write clearly and effectively. Students apply their skills through literature discussions, creative writing, book analyses, reports and other projects. Emphasis is placed on developing skills needed for effective written and oral communication.
Reading instruction teaches students to understand and use multiple strategies to read fluently, comprehend, and analyze a variety of texts. Vocabulary skills are enhanced through reading and the use of vocabulary textbooks. Students are exposed to the elements of literature through a wide range of genres.
Math concepts covered in sixth grade include fractions, decimals, percents, graphs, measurement, number theory, and geometry. More advanced courses in Pre-Algebra and Algebra are taught in seventh and eighth grade. Critical thinking skills and problem solving are emphasized throughout.
Students are taught World History and American History. Geography and Map Skills are integrated into the curriculum
Students are taught units in Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Environmental Science. Students conduct experiments in the science lab on a weekly basis.
Students are taught advanced concepts and values of Islam and their applications in everyday life. They also memorize, learn to translate, and analyze chapters of the Qur’an, the sayings of the Prophet, and supplications. Family Life units are also included.
Students are taught to read, write, and understand the Arabic language. These skills are reinforced through the use of Arabic literature.
Students have two periods a week of formal instruction in physical education. In addition, students have recess (informal physical activity) four times per week.
